Dubai: The lawyer of a Serbian man, whose 10-year imprisonment was confirmed yesterday for being involved in last year's Wafi robbery, will seek clemency before Dubai's highest court soon.
The Dubai Court of Appeal upheld the initial verdict of 10 years in jail, against the 33-year-old Serbian convict.
His lawyer Ali Abdullah Al Shamsi, of Ali Abdullah Al Shamsi Advocates and Legal Consultants, will appeal Sunday's ruling before the Court of Cassation.
Deportation
Presiding Judge Eisa Al Sharif also confirmed that the convict, N.M., a Dubai-based company owner, will be deported after serving his punishment.
Judge Al Sharif also confirmed the acquittal of 52-year-old Serbian visitor, M.M., of aiding and abetting N.M. in the Dh14.7 million-armed robbery from Graf jewellery store.
Lawyer Al Shamsi told Gulf News: "I will wait for the printed copy of the appeal's verdict sheet then study the reasoning which led the Appeal's Court to uphold the primary ruling... thereafter we will submit the legal response in our appeal before the highest court within the 30-days period."
This is the legal period during which the Public Prosecution or defendants appeal against an appeal's court verdict.
Al Shamsi earlier argued in his defence that N.M. didn't process visit visas for his four compatriots who burgled the jewellery store in Wafi City mall in April last year and did not know about the crime and did not involve himself in the heist.
M.M. was acquitted of aiding and abetting N.M. for lack of evidence.
