Dubai: An administrative clerk pleaded guilty to stealing $140,000 (about Dh518,000) from his company's safe and then apologised before a court, saying he returned the money.
"I am guilty and admit that I stole the money from the safe.
"I am sorry for what happened and I returned the money," the 27-year-old Indian suspect said when he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Thursday.
Records said the defendant disconnected the electric cables of the surveillance cameras before he took the safe keys from his colleague, opened it and pocketed the money.
An Indian manager testified before the Public Prosecution: "The person who is in charge of the safe informed me over the phone that some $140,000 had been stolen from the safe. I went to our company in Al Rifa'a area. The person, identified as S., told me that the suspect came to him and asked for the keys because he wanted to get an envelope from inside the safe. S. said that he handed over the keys to the suspect and didn't escort him when he opened the safe. The defendant later returned the keys to him and disappeared."
The manager added in his statement that S. became suspicious and when he checked the safe he discovered that the money had disappeared.
"When S. checked the surveillance cameras he also discovered that the electric cables had been disconnected.
"He reported the matter to the police," said the manager.
A verdict will be heard soon.
