Carpenter gets jail, fine for attempted murder
A Vietnamese carpenter has been jailed for intentionally attempting to kill his compatriot with a kitchen knife after he quarrelled with him while they watched television.
Dubai: A Vietnamese carpenter has been jailed for intentionally attempting to kill his compatriot with a kitchen knife after he quarrelled with him while they watched television.
A witness told prosecutors that the 22-year-old carpenter, N.T., was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the scuffle.
The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced the carpenter to one year in jail for attempting to kill the victim, V.T., and fined him Dh1,000 for consuming liquor. The accused will be deported after serving his punishment, which is still subject to appeal.
The duo exchanged verbal abuses, before the victim tried to get hold of a knife to stab the accused. N.T. was faster and stabbed V.T. thrice, added the 39-year-old Vietnamese witness.
The Public Prosecution's bill of charges said the accused had the intention to kill the victim when he grabbed a knife and stabbed him in the chest and shoulder twice.
The accused denied that he intended to attempt to kill the victim when he appeared in court, although records said he confessed during the public prosecution's interrogation.
The witness testified: "We were watching television on the night of the incident ... the victim joined us later. The accused provoked the victim, who got outraged and cursed N.T. The latter then cursed him back and a scuffle ensured. Meanwhile, V.T., who was drunk, thought the matter was over."
The accused walked in with a knife and repeatedly stabbed the victim until his roommates stopped him and phoned the police, according to the witness.
