Dubai: A butcher has been jailed for attempting to murder his colleague who accused him of repeatedly brandishing a knife in workers' faces every time he got drunk.

The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced the 43-year-old Filipino butcher to six months in jail followed by deportation.

Records said the 33-year-old Filipino victim accused the butcher of constantly scaring workers in labour accommodation with a knife every time he consumed liquor.

The accused, identified as J.M., pleaded not guilty before the court. J.M. will be tried before the Dubai Misdemeanour Court for consuming liquor.

The Public Prosecution charged him with the attempted murder of 33-year-old A.Y. by stabbing him in the back. The victim escaped from J.M.'s grip and rushed to the paramedics at the accommodation for treatment.

A.Y. testified: "My two colleagues and I were having lunch at about 1.00am. When we finished, one of my workmates took the dishes and went to clean them... we heard a very loud noise. When I opened the door to check about the noise, I saw the suspect standing at the doorstep. He instantly took out the knife from under his clothes and posed it upwards wanting to stab me. I tried to push his arm away but he was faster than me and stabbed me in the back."

The victim said he ran away to avoid more stabs.
