Dubai: Burglars stole an automated teller machine (ATM) at a branch of the Abu Dhabi National Bank in the Al Yaher area of Al Ain.

A spokesperson from the bank confirmed the incident but refused to give more details and it remains unclear how much money the ATM contained at the time of burglary.

According to the police, the thieves, whose identity is not yet known, stole the ATM from the room adjacent to the bank and loaded the machine on to a vehicle using a rope before driving off.

However, their attempt to get away was foiled by an Emirati, who reportedly chased them. They then threw the machine on to the road and escaped.

Police said that the ATM was not fixed to the wall, which made the job easy for the burglars. The ATM was located in a busy commercial area and there are at least three more banks in the area.

Police are hunting the burglars and are also examining footage from the surveillance cameras.
