Dubai: Pakistan's star pace bowler, Mohammad Asif, has been detained at Dubai airport on charges of possessing illegal drugs, prosecution sources told Gulf News on Tuesday.
Asif was returning to Pakistan through Dubai after playing in the Indian Premier League.
"A customs officer searched Asif and found the illegal substance, 0.24 grams of suspected hashish, in a small nylon sack in his wallet. We are waiting for the forensic laboratory's report to confirm the type and precise amount of the substance," Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Ali Rustom told Gulf News.
Sources close to the case said the investigation is still continuing.
The Pakistan Cricket Board has, meanwhile, rushed their Resource Director Nadeem Akram to Dubai. He has also hired a lawyer to assist Asif, who is in custody for the last 48 hours.
