Dubai: Fourteen UAE nationals who were found guilty of attempting to murder their 35-year-old compatriot have been sentenced to jail terms ranging from six months to a year.

The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced nine of the gang to a year in jail, the remaining five were given six months.

Dubai Public Prosecution charged the 14-strong gang, aged 19 to 38, with using swords, iron rods, an axe and a cleaver in an attempt to kill their 35-year-old victim, A.G., who reportedly had sex with one of their brothers. The court also ordered the confiscation of the weapons.

Police said the gang met in Al Mamzar and planned the assault in Oud Al Muteen. The murder attempt was made after one of the group, identified as A.I, 38, claimed the victim had intercourse with his younger brother.

A.I. went along with the others to "teach A.G. a lesson" the police were told. The victim's brother, Q.G., said the gang had twice tried to run over his brother prior to the attack.

One of the defence lawyers, advocate Abdul Hamid Al Kumity told the court earlier that due to previous disputes, the victim's family lodged a malicious complaint against the suspects, accusing them of trying to kill him using sharp instruments.

"It was very surprising and unbelievable - the 14 suspects simultaneously used sharp materials and assaulted the victim who did not die. Logic says that he would have been cut to pieces ... it's almost impossible to pinpoint specifically who caused the injuries," said Al Kumity.

The advocate also maintained the impeachment sheet contained discrepancies between the technical and verbal evidence that was submitted against the suspects.

Another defence lawyer Mohammad Al Redha, said the suspects were "heading to beat the victim and teach him a lesson."

"They did not have any intention to attempt to kill the victim because if that was the case then they wouldn't have left him until making sure that he was dead... Besides, the suspects carried sharp materials because they learnt that the victim's friends were carrying swords and knives as well," said Al Redha.
