Abu Dhabi: Two Asian men suspected of stealing electric cables in the Western Region in a bid to sell them in industrial areas have been caught by police. A 31 year-old illegal immigrant, M.A., and a 35 year-old loading truck driver, S.H., are accused of stealing the cables from their plastic containers and stripping them of their brass wires to sell them as scrap.

Colonel Ojeil Ali Abdullah Al Junaibi, Director of the Western Region Police Directorate, said that the stolen items allegedly belonged to government-owned institutions and were 600 metres in length in total. The cables were taken from two farms in Liwa.

According to police reports, one of the two suspects climbed electricity poles and cut the wire, and proceeded to remove their plastic cover.

“The police department received two calls reporting the incidents. After that, a team of experts was set up to catch the culprits,” Al Junaibi said.

Based on investigations, the two suspects were arrested in a different emirate.

According to police, the pair had confessed to their alleged crimes once they were faced with the evidence against them. M.A. also reportedly admitted to using a false name.

Al Junaibi urged all business owners to stay alert and to report any such incidents immediately to authorities.
