Student on drugs sentenced to jail in Dubai

Dubai: A student who police found naked in a car and under the influence of drugs and alcohol has been sentenced to four years in jail.

The 36-year-old Emirati student, M.O., was given clothes and asked to dress by the officers when he refused to cooperate with them at the time of his arrest on December 2.

The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced him to four years in jail for possessing and consuming narcotics, driving a car under the influence of drugs and causing an accident.

Presiding Judge Mohammad Jamal also fined the defendant Dh10,000 for driving the car without a licence and without the owner’s permission.

An Emirati sergeant said that Dubai Police handed the student some trousers before taking him into custody.

“We found M.O. in an abnormal condition and a strong smell of liquor came from the car seat where he was seated naked,” said the sergeant.

Prosecution records said the defendant was caught in possession of various drugs and he tested positive for drugs and alcohol.

The 36-year-old was charged with possessing heroin, amphetamine, methamphetamine, diazepam and phenobarbital for consumption purposes.

He was also accused of taking hashish, driving a car under the influence of liquor and drugs, reckless driving and wrecking the car and an iron barrier.

M.O. pleaded guilty when he appeared before the court.

He confessed to all the charges except causing damage to the car.

The sergeant said he and his colleague went to Ras Al Khor where a group of Pakistani and Syrian men claimed that M.O. was sitting in their friend’s car.

“The men told us that the defendant was under the influence of alcohol and refused to get out of the vehicle… he was sitting inside naked, drugged and drunk,” added the sergeant.

An Emirati anti-narcotics corporal said they found various drugs in the car that was parked behind a shopping centre.

Records cited the defendant admitting that he consumed drugs in Mirdif shortly before he was arrested in his brother’s vehicle.
