Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a debilitating disease which can turn a healthy and active person into a paralysed and immobile one. To raise awareness about this disease people from across the world are taking the “Ice Bucket Challenge” that involves pouring a bucket of ice water on oneself and nominating someone else to take the challenge within 24 hours.
Green Hope UAE, our youth organisation based in Dubai, always believes in promoting causes that benefit civil society. A few days ago, our members took up this challenge.
At the same time, we were concerned about water conservation as well so we decided to use exactly the same amount of water, one bucket, that we normally use for our daily bath. The previous night, we froze part of it into ice cubes. In the morning, we gathered at the beach for the challenge.
It was an amazingly refreshing exercise and was thoroughly enjoyable.
Prapti Jayanand, a nine-year-old member of the group, was the youngest one to take the challenge.
Vikram Satish, another one of our members, who took the challenge felt that these innovative means of spreading awareness were key to finding a solution to these dreaded diseases.
