Gulf News reader Deep Aranha wanted to raise awareness about an issue affecting all parents whose children take the bus. He said: ‘It is shocking theway some motorists disrespect the school bus stop sign while small children and their guardians cross the road. The school bus stop sign must be treated with thesame importance as a red light at a traffic junction. Such rash behaviour from motorists could injure or even cost an innocent life some day.’

As a school bus student myself, I've seen other smaller vehicles taking complete advantage of school buses as they feel buses and other large vehicles are a menace to the roads. All motorists in smaller vehicles should understand the risk they take while overtaking and ignoring the presence of a school bus. They put themselves in danger along with the students on the bus. The talk against school bus drivers is absolute nonsense, as they have undergone training and have been driving for years. I urge all motorists to have some courtesy and patience, and not to under-estimate school buses and their drivers who do a great job.

I totally agree that we should respect the stop signs on school buses. But we should also take into consideration the other motorists. I live in a area were there are many schools and have seen buses stopping in curbs and turnings without giving any consideration for oncoming traffic. we should understand that this is not a safe habit as turnings are blind spots for incoming traffic. Rather every community should have dedicated stops next to three to four buildings rather than bus stopping at every stop.

Absolutely Correct. That was one issue which was never raised. Besides motorists respecting the sign, the people crossing road including those who get off from bus should use zebra crossing so that safety is ensured from both ends.

this is a very common practice by motorists, but all the blame cannot be given to motorists. buses stop in 2 way roads and stop traffic from one side, the safety of the children is important, but at the same time blocking a road for 5 to 10 minutes is also wrong. buses should stop in places where it wont distrupt traffic. I am only saying this as i have personally experienced a wait of more than 5 minutes behind a bus stopped to pick up children, and in Dubai during rush hour 5 mins mean a lot, a delay in 5 minutes can delay someone for traffic for an hour. The motorists are not the only ones who should be blamed, bus drivers also should take care where they are stopping the bus.

Bus drivers are more careless then other drivers. I think that should also be highlighted. I have seen many school bus drivers stop the bus suddenly and even on main road depsite having bus space in parking slots.
