Sharjah
There is an issue that I have been noticing for a year and would like to get the attention of the related authorities to have it sorted out. The lagoon near the Sharjah Fish Market in the Al Jubail area is littered by passersby and in the past year, there has been no change or cleanup of the lagoon.
The litter is not just unpleasant to see, but is also dangerous for marine life. Plastic litter can be a source of toxic substances. Additionally, there is a chance that the marine animals might eat it, mistaking it for food. Consumption of plastic can cause intestinal injuries and death and could also transfer plastic waste up the food chain, too.
The Sharjah Municipality have placed bins in every nook and corner of the city. The authorities have also introduced separate blue and green bins for efficient waste management and for separating biodegradable and recyclable waste. There are many beach cleaning campaigns organised by the authorities to protect the environment from pollution. But people have become so irresponsible and lazy that they can’t even drop the trash in these bins and instead throw it in the water. People committing such acts should be strictly penalised.
I hope people become more responsible for their actions and stop doing such acts. I urge the authorities to clean up this area so that the aquatic life won’t get affected.
