There are several families residing in Sharjah’s Muwailah area, near National Paints interchange. More residents are continuing to occupy the area, which makes the lack of lighting in the neighbourhood very concerning.
As the sun goes down, residents become fearful of walking around outside due to poor vision in the vicinity. Female residents especially, often feel unsafe walking around at that time and so try to avoid going outside in the evening.
I have no doubt that criminals would take advantage of this problem. In fact, we once found a few drunken strangers attempting to forcefully enter my building and when they observed residents gathering around them, they took advantage of the dim lighting and ran away.
There is no explanation as to why Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) or the municipality has not provided ample street lights. This is a very basic requirement for a residential area.
It is a pressing concern. I have tried to contact both Sewa and municipal authorities about but my efforts have been in vain.
The concerned authorities must look into this matter and address it responsibly.
