Riyadh: The Ministry of Interior is working on a comprehensive plan to make the younger generation adhere to the moderate stance of Islam and ward off extremist and deviant thoughts.
The ministry will launch awareness campaigns through seminars and lectures targeting schools, colleges and universities, said Dr Ali Al Nafeesa, director-general of the Guidance Department at the ministry.
Speaking to reporters here yesterday, the official said the ministry, in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Higher Education, is striving hard to root out the scourge of terrorism from the Saudi society.
"For this, the ministry sees it is highly significant to start the drive from our schools and colleges. The younger generation should be given proper guidance from the very early stage of their education," he said while expressing hope that the awareness campaigns would produce a positive impact on both the citizens as well as expatriates.
He said the ministry is striving hard to protect the country as well as the citizens from terror acts that cause heavy casualties and loss of properties.
According to Dr Al Nafeesa, the campaign will help the younger generation understand the Islamic teachings of moderation and tolerance.
"It is essential to combat deviant thoughts with an approach based on rationale and wisdom. We have to enlighten the younger generation on the potential dangers of terrorism and extremism, as well as its negative impact on the society and the country as a whole."
