Riyadh: The Bangladeshi government will raise by 37.5 per cent the minimum wage paid to its citizens working in Saudi Arabia, which is grappling with a surge in inflation, a local newspaper reported yesterday.
The minimum wage paid to Bangladeshi workers will rise to 550 riyals (Dh539) per month as of July from 400 riyals, the Al Watan newspaper quoted Harun Al Rasheed, adviser for labour issues at Bangladesh's embassy in Riyadh, as saying. Rasheed was not immediately available for comment.
After the increase, Bangladeshis' minimum wage will still be lower than minimum wages paid to Nepalese, Pakistani and Indian workers which stand at 600, 900 and 993 riyals respectively, according to Al Watan.
Saudi Arabia's 25 million population includes some 8 million expatriates, which it relies upon to perform mainly blue-collar jobs. There are around 1.5 million Bangladeshi workers in the kingdom.
