Qatar conference to focus on security, integrity
Plan to highlight media engagement, utilising social media
Manama: Ways to improve knowledge and best practices in safety, security and integrity will be discussed at an international conference to be held in Qatar.
The conference, under the theme of “advancing the security and integrity of sport to safeguard the future” will be held on March 18-19 in Doha and will bring together 400 international experts and stakeholders, the Doha-based International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS) said.
Wilfried Lemke, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Sport for Development and Peace, will speak at the conference, Securing Sport 2013.
Lemke who leads and coordinates the efforts of the UN to promote understanding and support for sport as an instrument for development and peace will deliver a keynote speech on the power of sport to erase discrimination.
William Gaillard, Senior Adviser to the Uefa President, will take part in the panel session, Securing Your Media Plan, that will explore how media planning can make or break the security plan for an event and examine how to engage effectively with the media and utilise social media.
“I look forward to welcoming organisations from around the world,” Mohammad Hanzab, President of the ICSS, said. “These include leading international governing bodies, mega-event experts and world-class international athletes, to what I am sure will be an important platform for sharing information and exploring best practice in the field of sport, safety, security and integrity.”
The ICSS leader said that he was confident that Lemke’s United Nations experience in sports development and Gaillard’s expertise in international football would provide delegates with a first-hand account of how the power of sport has the ability to improve lives through development programmes and the media.
Qatar has emerged as a centre for international sporting events and has hosted the 2006 Asian Games, the 2011 Asian Cup and the 2011 Pan Arab Games. It will become the first Arab and Muslim country to host the finals of the football World Cup in 2022.
