Manama: Qatar Charity (QC) has allocated about QR3.5 million ($960,560) humanitarian aid for the people of Libya.
The amount will be used to buy relief materials for the hundreds of thousands of people who have been facing the wrath of the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and his close aides.
QC's decision was announced by the organisation's vice-president Abdullah Bin Hussain Al Numaeih at a press conference, Qatar Tribune reported on Monday.
"The relief campaign was launched in response to the call for help by the people of Libya who are suffering from the bloodshed and traumatic events in the strife-torn country," Al Numaeih said. "The relief aid will help buy medical and food supplies for the people who are currently in the middle of unimaginable suffering."
The relief campaign particularly aims to buy medical supplies and other emergency services like milk products and essential food supplies, blankets, mattresses and baby food.
The relief materials will be provided to the people living inside Libya, to those stranded on the Egyptian border and to the expatriates returning to their countries.
"The Hamad Medical Corporation and QC have come together to send two medical teams, comprising doctors and specialists to Libya. The first team will head to the country through Egypt while the second team will go to Libya via Tunisia," Al Numaeih said.
The QC members along with its co-partners are also cooperating with the humanitarian groups working on the ground.
Al Numaeih cited the example of Arab Doctors Union in Egypt and the UK-based Islamic Relief Worldwide who are already providing aid and medical assistance to the people.
"Qatari nationals and expatriates should give more support in terms of logistics and financial aid to the people of Libya. The aid campaign will help reduce the suffering of at least a few Libyans," he said.
