Muscat: Road accidents over the Eid Al Fitr holiday in the Sultanate claimed 28 lives and left 346 others maimed, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) stated here on Monday.

As many as 234 traffic accidents were reported across the country over the roughly weeklong holiday. Most of the fatalities were blamed on speeding and reckless overtaking. The Batinah and Interior regions of Oman accounted for the highest number of fatalities with six deaths each, while the Western and Eastern regions had four each.

Most appalling safety record

Last month, the government revealed that the Sultanate ranks among countries with some of the most appalling road safety records. A study conducted by the Directorate General of Social Statistics put the mortality rate associated with traffic accidents well above the international norm.

Oman has made road safety a priority objective. Authorities have threatened jail terms and hefty fines for reckless drivers and those guilty of other traffic violations. An ongoing nationwide campaign aims to emphasise the importance of responsible driving on the part of motorists.
