Muscat: Oman has ordered withdrawal of contact lens cleaner 'Complete Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution' manufactured by Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) of Santa Ana, California due to its harmful impact, according to a press release from the ministry on Monday.
"It has been found that the use of this type of cleaner results in a rare, but serious, eye infection, Acanthamoeba keratitis, caused by a parasite," the press release states.
Meanwhile, the US Food and Drug Administration says on its website "Consumers who wear soft contact lenses should stop using the solution, discard all partially-used or unopened bottles and replace their lenses and storage container."
The Ministry of Regional Municipality, Water Resources and Environment has also withdrawn certain types of melamine from the market.
They come under the commercial names Melamine-China, Melina Melamine, Hua Mei, Hecho En China, Noramine, NFI, Foah and Kincu Melamine Ware.
"The mildly toxic chemical melamine is commonly added to animal feed," the statement said. The release added that steps are being taken by the ministry to protect consumer health and safety. The ministry is conducting regular inspection campaigns, in which various state departments take part to ensure adherence to food safety standards.
