Muscat: A new expressway that connects Muscat with the UAE will be implemented during the sultanate's eighth five-year plan (2011-2015), the local Oman News Agency (ONA) reported on Tuesday.
ONA quoted National Economy Minister Ahmad Bin Abdul Nabi Makki as saying that the proposed expressway is among a raft of major infrastructure projects planned for implementation during the eighth plan.
Makki, who is currently on a visit to Japan, made the comments during a meeting with top Japanese government officials and business leaders on Monday.
He underlined opportunities for Japanese investment in a host of big-ticket projects on the anvil in the sultanate, including airports, seaports, and an ambitious national rail network.
The Muscat-UAE expressway project will run the length of the populous and rapidly industrialising Batinah coastal region of the sultanate.
A team of international consultants is currently undertaking the detailed engineering design of the 275-kilometre super-highway that starts from Naseem Garden, on the outskirts of Muscat, and culminates at Khatmat Malaha on Oman's northern border with the UAE.
A series of toll plazas are also part of the key points along the expressway.
