Muscat city council orders removal of unauthorised cafes
Muscat City's Municipal Council has ordered the removal of 25 cafes and kiosks found to have been built without authorisation on public land within the capital region
Muscat: Muscat City's Municipal Council has ordered the removal of 25 cafes and kiosks found to have been built without authorisation on public land within the capital region.
The decision to seek the removal of the offending commercial structures was taken at Monday's meeting of the Municipal Council, chaired by Sultan Bin Hamdoon Al Harthy, Chairman of Muscat Municipality.
At the meeting, council members were informed that the 25 cafes and kiosks in question lacked the requisite title deeds.
Negative impact on traffic
Their presence, adjoining public roads, roundabouts and parks, also had a negative impact on the smooth flow of vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the areas concerned. The operators of the cafes and kiosks were given until 2014 to have their facilities removed or to face legal action by the council.
Council members also reviewed measures to regulate the proliferation of health clubs, massage parlours and gyms in the city. Of late, the burgeoning fitness and wellness industry in the capital has been subjected to tough regulations aimed at combating practices deemed immoral.
