Muscat: Omani authorities are investigating claims of unsafe working conditions against a company following a landslide in Qurum district of Muscat that killed two of its workers last week.
The General Federation of Oman Trade Union slammed the as yet unnamed company for not abiding by safety rules as there were some dangerous cracks in the mountain where the landslide occurred.
“Oman has signed several agreements with international and regional organisations concerning with the rights of workers,” says Nabhan Al Batashi, chairman of the federation. He said the federation has contacted the company responsible for the deaths of two Asian workers.
The Royal Oman Police (ROP) along with other competent authorities are investigating the incident.
A number of cases have been registered against the company for violating Omani labour laws over hiring absconding and laid-off workers, an official at the Ministry of Manpower told Gulf News.
ROP sources told Gulf News that one of the survivors, a Bangladeshi, was an absconder. The worker is still in Khoulah hospital and his health condition is stable. He narrowly escaped death when more than 30 tonnes of rocks fell on him and his colleagues while they were welding for a water pipeline project for the Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW).
It took Public Authority for Civil Defece and Ambulance (PACDA) personnel more than 20 hours to recover bodies of the victims.
