Manama: Public and private schools remained closed on Thursday in Kuwait after a day of heavy rains that caused havoc in several areas and disrupted traffic.

Concerns about a second day of rain-related problems were only slightly dissipated after the meteorological department had forecasted “unstable conditions with moderate to fresh south easterly to southerly wind, with a speed of 25-50 km/h, and a chance for rain that might be thundery at times.”

The department said the weather in the evening would also be “unstable with light to moderate freshening gradually at times south easterly wind, with a speed of 15 - 45 km/h and a chance for rain that might be thundery at times.”

Acting Secretary General of Kuwait University Dr. Adam Al Mulla said the students and staff were safe in all the locations under the university.

He said that he inspected the locations in Khaldiya, Adailiya, Kaifan, Shuwaikh and Jabriyah and that they were all safe.

Kuwait University and the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training (PAAET) had announced that Thursday would be a normal working day despite pleas and calls made on social media to suspend courses for the day, emulating the example of public and private schools.

Civil Aviation officials said that flights at the airport were back to normal after two planes were diverted to Dammam Airport in Eastern Saudi Arabia between 5 and 6 am due to the difficult weather conditions.
