Manama: Kuwait police are sifting through 800 university certificates submitted by foreigners amid reports that some of them were not authentic.
At least 50 bogus certificates had been used by Kuwait-based expatriates to obtain driving licences.
Under Kuwait's traffic rules, foreigners must have a university degree to be able to obtain a local driving licence. The authorities say the rule is meant to limit the number of drivers on the roads and help ease congestions.
According to local Arabic daily Al Qabas, 16 people had been arrested for their links with the case, but were released pending the investigations.
People who benefited from the fake certificates will have their licences revoked and will face legal charges.
