Kuwait and Spain are steadily moving towards wider and close relations and cooperation, the foreign ministers of both countries have said in Madrid.
Shaikh Mohammad Sabah Al Salem Al Sabah and Miguel Angel Moratinos said that the ties would be strengthened by the fact that Kuwait would be the next chair of the Gulf Cooperation Council while Spain will be heading the EU's on January 1.
The two ministers on Thursday evening inaugurated the new headquarters of Kuwait's embassy in Madrid.
This event is a new step forward for the deeply rooted relations between Spain and Kuwait, Shaikh Mohammad said on the sidelines of the ceremony.
The Spanish minister said that his country was keen on enhancing relations with Kuwait, stressing that the embassy celebrations strengthened the partnership between the two countries.
Spain is also keen on boosting cooperation with the Arab world and the Mediterranean, Moratinos said, quoted by Kuwait News Agency.
Kuwait and Spain will be working on resolving the challenges to have the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the GCC and the EU endorsed, he said, adding that the ratified FTA would be the fruit of 18 years of negotiations.
Negotiations between the EU and GCC started in 1990 but have been suspended several times over sharp differences.
Last week, a GCC official said that most of the issues had been resolved and that the agreement could be signed either at the end of this year or early next year.
The GCC has this month agreed to sign a free trade agreement early next year with New Zealand.
