Manama: Kuwait police have launched an investigation into a case in which an Egyptian expatriate jumped from the first floor of an apartment building after her mother and brother brought a complete stranger and told her that he was her husband.
According to local Arabic daily Al Rai, the 18-year-old Egyptian told police after recovering at a hospital in Kuwait City that she was staying with her family at the apartment in the Salmiya neighbourhood when her mother and brother introduced a man and told her that she was his wife and should start "spouse relations" with him.
Shocked, the teenager jumped from the window to escape and suffered multiple fractures. She was taken to hospital where she was treated for 19 days. The report said that none of her family members visited her.
However, when her brother eventually showed up at the hospital, he asked her to go home with him and told her that the man had divorced her.
The teenager rejected her brother's call and wanted proof that she had ever married the stranger. She said that she could not trust her brother and that he would not protect her.
The newspaper on Tuesday said that the police have summoned the mother and the brother for further investigation.
