Dubai: Khalid Al Adwah, an independent candidate who lost the May 16 election in Kuwait, was declared elected recently after a recount of votes in his constituency.
Al Adwah was earlier placed 11th in the tribal constituency after polling 12,604 votes. Dr Badi Hassan Mohammad Watif Al Dosari with 12,986 took the 10th spot. In Kuwait, each of the five constituencies can elect 10 members to parliament.
Al Adwah petitioned the Constitutional Court requesting a recount of votes in his constituency.
After recounting, it was found that Al Adwah got 13,115 votes, according to his lawyers Mohammad Monawar and Dr Faayez Al Dufairi.
It is still unknown when Al Adwah will take his seat in the parliament. His lawyers hinted that it would be soon after completing some formalities.
Al Dufairi said the recounting has brought a change in the parliament on two previous occasions in the very same fifth constituency in 2006.
"Mubarak Al Wa'alan and Abdullah Al Ajami, who were announced among 10 winners to represent the constituency, lost their seats to Askar Al Enizi and Sa'adoun Al Otaibi after a recount in 2006," he said.
Al Adwah, a popular parliamentarian, represented his constituency in 1992, 1996, 1999, 2003 and 2006. He lost the election of 2008, the first to be conducted on the basis of dividing the state into five constituencies instead of 25. He, according to his lawyers, will return to the parliament through a court ruling.
Al Adwah is an Islamist who doesn't belong to a particular bloc.
He is known for his objection against giving women the right to vote and to run in parliamentary elections.
He is a graduate of the Sharia and Islamic Studies College in the University of Kuwait and a post graduate of Al Azhar University in Egypt.
