US-Bahraini deal on nuclear power

Bahrain has signed a deal with the United States to cooperate on civilian nuclear power.

Washington: Bahrain has signed a deal with the United States to cooperate on civilian nuclear power.

Eager to continue applying regional pressure on Iran, the State Department said such cooperation was a model for Middle Eastern nations to follow.

Bahrain, a huge oil and gas exporter, said it would not be seeking sensitive nuclear fuel technologies and would buy fuel on the international market.

The State Department described the agreement as "a tangible expression of the United States' desire to cooperate with states in the Middle East, and elsewhere, that want to develop peaceful nuclear power in a manner consistent with the highest standards of safety, security and non-proliferation."

Bahrain also endorsed the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism, a joint US-Russian backed effort to prevent militant groups from obtaining nuclear weapons.
