Manama: Ten Bahraini families who lost loved ones have been invited to the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI) headquarters in Manama to meet the Chair of the BICI, Prof M Cherif Bassiouni, the commission said.
The families were randomly selected from the BICI database from amongst those who had expressed a desire to see Professor Bassiouni and discuss their individual situations.
The BICI said that the visit was part of a series of visits it conducted within the mandate of its investigation of the events of February 2011 and their consequences.
BICI staff have met a range of political and civic organisations in addition to prisoners, detainees, health workers, trade union activists and representatives of large commercial organisations.
The BICI said that it met also on Monday Dr Ali Albuainain, the Attorney General, and visited the Juvenile Prosecution Centre and the Dry Docks prison, where it held a meeting with inmates and doctors.
The team met Drs Ali Al Ekri, Nader Diwani, Ahmad Hassan, Mahmoud Asghar, Ebrahim Abdullah Ebrahim, Abdul Khaleq Al Oraiby, Ghassan Dhaif, Bassam Dhaif, Sayed Majed, Hassan Nasser and Najah Ebrahim who spoke with Prof Bassiouni at length about the conditions of their imprisonment and the events which led to their arrest.
The commission, set up by King Hamad Bin Eisa Al Khalifa in June, has been asked to determine whether the events of February and March and thereafter involved violations of international human rights law and norms, and to make the recommendations that it deems appropriate.
