Manama: Bahrain, the only Gulf country not to report any swine flu-related deaths, on Sunday evening confirmed its first fatality, an Asian woman in her 30s.
“The identity of the victim has not been established. She is a woman from south east Asia, in her 30s, who recently came to the emergency department of the Salmaniya Medical Complex,'' Dr Mohammed Amin Al Awadhi said. “She was in a critical condition and had the swine flu symptoms, which prompted the health personnel to move her to the intensive care unit for treatment.''
Her condition was so critical that she could not respond to the treatment. The medical staff could not determine where and how she was infected by the virus, he said.
Bahrain has recorded more than 200 cases of the swine flu, but most of the patients were allowed to go home following successful treatment.
