Abu Dhabi: The Administrative Committee of the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) began its meeting with the participation of 150 representatives from 70 countries in Abu Dhabi on Monday.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Anwar Mohammad Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, highlighted the pioneering steps taken by the UAE over the past three years.

"The UAE has taken major steps in the last three years by pushing its hybrid energy economy as part of its ongoing quest to become among leading renewable energy and fossil fuel energy-based economies in the world," Gargash said.

Diplomatic efforts

He expressed hope that more countries would join Irena and sign its statute.

"As we are pleased to know that Mexico and other countries have joined Irena, we hope the Irena family will expand to include more countries all around the world," Gargash said.

He said the UAE, represented by its Foreign Minister Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan would continue its diplomatic efforts to encourage countries to join the Agency.

Irena is a role model of cooperation between countries all over the world, Gargash said.

He called on the representatives to urge their countries to join the renewable energy agency and sign its statute.
