Islamabad: Pakistan will import electricity from Iran for Gawadar, the site of the upcoming deep sea port in Balochistan, the Senate was informed on Friday.

Iran has agreed in principle to provide 100MW of electricity to Gawadar and negotiations on price are in final stages, Minister for Water and Power Liaquat Ali Jaoti told the upper house of the parliament.

The minister said a power transmission line would be constructed from Polan in Iran to Gawadar, with each country to finance the portion of the line on its side. The port is scheduled to become fully operational early next year.

He said electricity was already being provided by the Iranian side to some Pakistani towns along the common border.

The minister said the country also had a plan to import 1,000MW power from Tajikistan by means of a high voltage transmission line through Afghanistan.
