Dubai: There’s a new bug affecting iPhone users around the world and it's turning many text messages into a gibberish mess.

People who have updated to Apple’s latest mobile operating system, iOS 11, have quickly realised that every time they type the letter “i,”  a strange character appears.

Some users reported that one of the most frequently used letters in the alphabet is automatically replaced with letter "A " and a random question mark inside a box.

The error has caused consternation among Apple fans, and they have flooded the company’s technical support team with complaints. Those affected are users of iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

“Am I the only one incredibly annoyed that [Apple iOS on Apple iPhones] cannot properly type and show the letter “i”?,” tweeted one user, Michael Giannopoulos.

Discussions about the new glitch, which surfaced only a few days ago, are also trending in UAE’s social media. It is one of the issues users have reported, on top of the battery drainage issue.

Apple has a huge following in the UAE and the recent release of iPhone X has proven just that.

Fortunately, Apple has come up with a temporary workaround and it has set up a special page to help users address the problem.

The new iOS 11 has recently been rolled out and it includes new features. Some of these allow users to turn Live Photos into looping GIFs or activate the "Do Not Disturb" feature when driving on the road.

Not all iPhone users in the UAE, however, have been affected by the new bug. “I have just updated to the new iOS and I don’t find any problem when typing the letter "i." It probably depends on the type of unit you’re using. Mine doesn't have the autocorrect feature,” said one user.

Others have also opted not to update their phone to avoid technical issues.“I’m afraid it’s going to freeze my unit, like what happened when I last updated to the latest operating system,” said another user.
