Sharjah: Emirates Islamic on Wednesday said it has collaborated with the University of Sharjah to support students in need of financial aid, through the Emirates Islamic Charity Fund.

The two parties discussed means of cooperation during a recent meeting at the university’s headquarters. They agreed to extend support to students who require financial aid by disbursing payments towards their tuition fees.

The meeting was attended by Dr Salah Al Haj, vice-chancellor for Community Affairs at the University of Sharjah, and Awatif Al Harmoudi, general manager of Operational Quality and Processes at Emirates Islamic.

Al Harmoudi said: “Education is central to the development and progress of communities and a major factor in human development. We are pleased to cooperate with the University of Sharjah to provide financial assistance to students to help them complete their education. This initiative is part of our commitment to give back to the community, and embodies the true spirit of giving, according to the provisions of Sharia. In cooperation with the University of Sharjah, we will evaluate individual cases and ensure that students who need financial support receive timely support.”

Al Haj expressed his gratitude to Emirates Islamic for launching the initiative, emphasising that the University of Sharjah is always keen to cooperate with various institutions in the UAE in support of the community.

In 2016, Emirates Islamic launched the Emirates Islamic Charity Fund to manage the bank’s strategy for charitable donations and giving.

The fund provides financial aid under several main areas, including food, shelter, health, education and social welfare. The fund has been set up with the primary objective of allocation of financial aid to large charities, public and private institutions, as well as individuals in need.

This year, the bank has so far distributed more than Dh30 million to various charitable causes. Emirates Islamic has disbursed funds towards medical and rehabilitation equipment to government and privately run institutions.
