Dubai: Al Khail Road - a major road parallel to Shaikh Zayed Road, will be turned into a six-lane highway to cope with increasing traffic congestion, said a senior official.
His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has approved Dh1.29 billion contracts for Phase 2 and 3 of the Al Khail Road Upgrading Project being undertaken by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
The project includes widening and upgrading the 15km-long Al Khail Road between the junction of Muscat Road up to the junction of Emirates Road.
The existing road will be widened from four to six lanes, and the existing four roundabouts on the road will be transformed into interchanges.
The project also includes an extension of the Al Khail Road for nine kilometres providing a link between the Emirates Road interchange and the Dubai Bypass Road to serve new communities.
Al Khail Road is a key road parallel to Shaikh Zayed Road and Emirates Road. It starts from the Bu Khadra Interchange (Interchange of Oud Metha-Al Khor roads) and terminates at Emirates Road. Its expansion will help ease traffic on Shaikh Zayed Road and will provide an alternative route for motorists.
"The project aims to create a new traffic corridor to support Shaikh Zayed Road and Emirates Road," said Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA.
The RTA is also upgrading the Parallel Roads Project and Dubai Bypass Road; which serve residential projects under construction such as Jumeirah Village South, Dubai Land, Dubai Sports City and the International Media Production Zone.
"It has been divided into six phases. Three of them have been completed and one is underway, pushing the value of contracts so far awarded under the project to more than Dh1.8 billion.
"Phase II of the project, which has been awarded to the Gunal Construction Company at a cost of Dh851.9 million includes construction of two multi-level interchanges to replace the existing two roundabouts at the intersection of Al Khail Road with Road 319 and Road 323 at Al Qouz residential and industrial areas.
Traffic jams
Phase III of the project has been awarded to the Ascon Road Contracting Co at a cost of Dh438.2 million. It covers upgrading the road from Al Khail-Umm Suqueim interchange to the Emirates Road.
It includes widening the existing road, constructing a bridge at the intersection of Road 331, and a new bridge for Jumeirah Village South.
An interchange at the junction of Al Khail Road and Emirates Road will be constructed to ease traffic jams.
