Dubai: Motorists have been spotted slowing down near the new Safa Park and Al Maktoum Bridge Salik toll gates.
The new toll gates between Interchange 1 and Interchange 2 on Shaikh Zayed Road, and Al Maktoum Bridge are not yet operational, but this hasn't stopped drivers from slowing down in surprise.
Motorist K.P. said: "The Salik gate should be covered up if it's not working yet. It's going to cause accidents with people slowing down."
"I've seen lots of people slowing down near the new Salik gates - what do they think is going to happen? They will still get charged if they slow down," another motorist, G.M. said.
Car pile-up
Last month, many motorists escaped injury in a car pile-up on Maktoum Bridge.
A driver stopped in the middle of the bridge to try and avoid a Salik fine, as reported in Gulf News.
Last September, drivers were also found to be switching off their lights at night, to try and avoid being caught by Salik cameras.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said at the time the toll gates are capable of reading number plates during the day and at night.
The newly-introduced Maktoum Bridge and Safa Park Salik gates will be operational from September 9. If you cross the Al Barsha and Safa Park gates in one journey only one charge will be made, and there is a maximum charge of Dh24 per day, per vehicle.
