Abu Dhabi: In what could be termed as a bizarre hit and run spree, a 19-year-old caused 11 accidents in a matter of 15 minutes on Tuesday, police sources told Gulf News.

No serious injuries or damage were reported.

Driving from the Corniche Al Qurm Street to Al Saada Street on Tuesday afternoon, the youth hit several cars and attempted to flee the scene, before the traffic police nabbed him.

The young man who was drunk, recently got his driver's licence and was driving his father's car, according to a report published in an Arabic daily. The police sources refused to confirm the report but said the driver possessed a licence.

Investigation

"The man had a worn face and looked very tired, so people must have mistaken him to be drunk," said the source, who requested not to be named.

The driver is believed to have committed a series of offences from jumping red light to fleeing the accident scene.

"Police case has been opened against him and the investigations are still on," said the source, adding that the officers in charge interrogated the young man as well as other motorists involved in the accident to collect further details. Following the spree of accidents, the man was taken to the hospital for medical examination.A witness said 16 cars were damaged in all. Another source at the police department said that if the driver is a Muslim and gets convicted on charges of drunk driving then the penalty usually involves 80 lashes in addition to fines with or without a jail term.

The licence of the driver might also be suspended for sometime. The final verdict, however, is up to the judicial system to decide after studying initial reports submitted by the traffic police officials.
