Sharjah: The closure of Al Nahda roundabout (near Sharjah College) sparked traffic jam on Al Ittihad Road on Thursday, mainly at the Khulafa Al Rashideen Bridge.
The roundabout will remain closed for a week as work is ongoing to convert it into an intersection.
"There was traffic jams while getting out of the exit and it was also very difficult to get across to the far-left lane," said Ehab, adding that Al Ittihad Road was clear after the interchange.
This roundabout is frequently used by motorists heading towards Dubai passing by the Sahara Centre.
Motorists at the closed square had to take a right diversion and drive all the way down to Al Majaz, take a U-turn back towards the square, which leads directly towards the shopping centre. Some motorists also complained about lack of signboards.
"I had to go to the Sahara Centre and didn't know how to get there because the road signs pointed to Al Majaz, Abu Shagara and Dubai. I kept going straight until I saw a U-turn, and to my surprise I found myself driving back to the square but on the opposite direction," said Fatima Ebrahim.
Major Sultan Al Juwaid, Director of Anjad at the Sharjah Police Operations room, said all motorists would have to drive towards the right side of the road.
Motorists driving from Al Khan and passing through the Khulafa Al Rashideen Bridge have to drive towards the right side, towards Industrial Area 1.
Motorists coming from Al Nahda Road have to take Al Khan Road, while those coming from the first industrial area are diverted to Al Khan Road.
Motorists are encouraged to call the toll free number 80086767 of the public works.
