Dubai: Many Chinese workers in Dubai had to be satisfied with just a phone call home to their families for the Lunar New Year celebrations, and said they felt very homesick during the festive season.

The festivities mark the coming of spring and family gatherings are common this time, one worker said.

Jingrui Zhao, a 27-year-old construction site supervisor, who lives in a labour accommodation in Jebel Ali, said that he cannot stop thinking of his parents.

"The only celebrations we will have is a dinner of chicken, meat and some vegetables while watching Chinese channels in an effort to recall the feeling of celebrations in our home country," he said.

Lonely

Two small red decorations hanging on the door of the outdoor dining hall are the only sign of celebrations in the Chinese labour accommodation.

The dining hall has a television placed in the middle and the workers were gathered around it.

Wei Hu, a father of two, said a phone call to his wife and children is the only way he can join in their happiness in this New Year.

"This is the second New Year that I have spent away from my family and I hope that it will be the last," he said.
