Dubai: Police confiscated hundreds of private vehicles that caused traffic chaos during impromptu National Day celebrations across the city on Monday and Tuesday, a senior police official said Wednesday.
Traffic police said they would also prevent motorists from creating further disruptions by closing Jumeirah, Al Diyafah and Al Mamzar roads to all but residents of the areas the roads pass through.
Lieutenant Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Deputy Director of the Dubai Traffic Department, told Gulf News that traffic police confiscated around 300 vehicles on Jumeirah Road alone on Tuesday. He said their owners endangered the lives of road users and created traffic chaos.
"Traffic police also confiscated 157 vehicles in Deira on Tuesday for the same reason, as we had earlier warned motorists from creating random cavalcades without the knowledge or permission of police," he said.
Al Mazroui said that on Monday, traffic police had confiscated 198 vehicles in Bur Dubai and another 67 in Deira. The vehicles had been decorated in a way that obscured their number plates or reduced the driver's visibility, he said. In particular, the front and rear windows of vehicles should not be obscured, the officer explained, adding that fines were also issued to those who had created random cavalcades or driven recklessly.
"The random cavalcades led to many minor accidents and a general lack of discipline. Traffic police were forced to close roads to ease traffic flow and put an end to the chaos," he said.
Al Mazroui said traffic police remained on full alert to prevent a repeat of such incidents across the city.
"We will not be lenient with motorists who do not abide by traffic rules or follow police instructions. We will also prevent motorists from forming cavalcades by closing Jumeirah, Al Diyafah and Al Memzar roads to non-residents," he said.
The officer warned motorists against staging similar celebrations during the Eid Al Adha holidays, saying police would be in place across the city to stamp out any illegality.
Pedestrian killed
One person was killed when a bus ran him over in Jebel Ali's industrial area yesterday afternoon, police said.
Police said the Asian man was trying to cross the road where there was no designated crossing point when a 24-seater bus ran over him at around 12pm.
