Sharjah: The Ministry of Interior is coordinating with Interpol to track down an organised network that steals cars from the US and brings them into the country.
The existence of the organised network operating in the country came to light after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Sharjah police received information about two Mercedes S550 and SL550, both 2007 models, that were suspected of being stolen from the United States and shipped into the country.
Police set up search teams after verifying the information and came across two Pakistanis who had approached the vehicle testing section in Sharjah with modified chassis numbers.
Sharjah police arrested the Pakistanis.
Police discovered documents and other papers that were issued by a shop selling spare parts.
The shop is based in the UAE and is believed to be involved in bringing stolen cars into the country, in order to sell them.
Accomplice
Further investigation led the police to a third car, a BMW that was also stolen and parked in a car showroom in Abu Shagara.
The two Pakistani suspects confessed to having changed the chassis number in an aluminium workshop that was owned by a Pakistani.
They told the police the plan was to ship in more stolen cars with the help of their accomplice in the US, especially if they succeeded at selling the three stolen cars.
Both men have been referred to court.
