Abu Dhabi: President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Sunday held talks with Syrian President Bashar Al Assad, who arrived on a three-day official visit to the UAE.
Shaikh Khalifa welcomed Bashar and pointed out that the visit would enhance bilateral relations in all fields in the best interests of the two countries.
The two leaders stressed their keenness to activate bilateral cooperation, especially in economy and investment, and exchanged views on the latest regional and international developments.
They reiterated their support for achieving national reconciliation in Lebanon, which calls for doubling efforts and coordination to restore Arab solidarity in the face of current challenges.
They also stressed the importance of joint Arab action, consultation and coordination on all issues related to the Arab nation.
In a press statement following the talks, the Syrian President said the UAE-Syrian talks gave a new momentum to boost inter-Arab relations.
Bashar thanked Shaikh Khalifa for the warm reception accorded to him and his accompanying delegation.
"I held constructive talks with Shaikh Khalifa based on brotherhood and friendship ties between our two countries," Bashar said.
Shaikh Khalifa conferred the Zayed Order on the Syrian President as a token of appreciation for the deep-rooted ties between the two countries. Later, Shaikh Khalifa hosted a lunch banquet in honour of President Bashar and his accompanying delegation.
Bashar was received on arrival by Shaikh Khalifa, General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, Shaikh Sultan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, and other Shaikhs and senior officials.
He was accorded a 21-cannon salute before he inspected the guard of honour.
