Dubai: Residents are being invited to vote for Dubai to appear on a new global edition of Monopoly.
The popular board game, manufactured by Hasbro, is introducing the World Edition, inviting online users to vote for cities that should appear on the board.
With just over nine days voting time remaining, Dubai was ranked 17th, with 2.1 per cent of the votes, while Istanbul was first, followed by Montreal and Cape Town in third place.
Members of the social networking site Facebook have set up a group campaign encouraging people to vote for Dubai, which has drawn more than 2,000 supporters.
The site www.monopolyworldvote.com requires e-mail registration/activation.
Visitors can vote for multiple cities and nominate other cities to enter in the 'wildcard' running.

Are you kidding me? Residents urged to give Dubai a slot on Monopoly? I mean hello. don't you have anything else to do? Jahanzeb Dubai,UAE Posted: February 21, 2008, 10:31
Mr. Graham, it was surprising to read your comments regarding this article. I believe you have just been in town for only a couple of years and hence lack the patriotism. Most of us have been living our entire life over here and every achievement Dubai gets, fills our hearts with joy! Even if its a square on an online board game. So, I believe you should be to one to go get a life and learn about being loyal to the country that feeds you. Mohammad Dubai,UAE Posted: February 21, 2008, 10:06
The cost of living is up everywhere in the world. That is not an excuse for us not to show ourselves and be the part of the known game. Let us look out of the shell and tell the world. We have the tall buildings, we have very good golf and tennis courts, road infrastructures, we are global, come visit us. Let us look at what the world wants, not just the old folks who had the days. Born and brought up in Dubai, I am extremely excited about the Monopoly voting. Dubai surely must get the highest slot! And this is such an amazing idea to have online global voting. Sara Mississauga,Canada Posted: February 21, 2008, 06:16
Apparently Hasbro's creative team cannot make a decision themselves and need a popular vote for it. What's next; Pepsi asking people what color of cola they next want? Imran Boston,USA Posted: February 21, 2008, 06:09
One of the best games I ever played, I just did register to vote.. All the way with Dubai.

As a frequent visitor here, it's actually fitting to have Dubai a square in Monopoly. With the ever rising rent and cost of living, people might just have to go to jail... do not pass Go...do not collect $200 Julio Dubai,UAE Posted: February 20, 2008, 19:23
Get a Life! I bet Hasbro can't believe the free advertising they are getting from papers like The Gulf News. Do 2000 people really care if Dubai gets to be a square on an online board game? Frightening. Get a life. Graham Dubai,UAE Posted: February 20, 2008, 16:35
Dubai will be no longer in the favourite city list. Due to increases in the cost of living. Harish Dubai,UAE Posted: February 20, 2008, 14:12
