Al Ain: High humidity and high temperatures have caused uncomfortable conditions in coastal cities across the UAE.
Weathermen hope drier south-easterly winds in the next 24 hours will help ease the situation.
People living in Dubai and other coastal areas will experience unpleasant evenings with humidity as high as 95 per cent.
"Evenings will not be pleasant in Dubai and other coastal areas due to the high humidity," said Dr S.K. Gupta, a meteorologist at the Dubai Meteorology Office.
The humidity caused fog in parts of Sharjah, Dubai, and other cities and the meteorologist warned motorists to drive carefully at night and early in the morning. "We expect visibility of 200 to 250 metres in the coastal belt," he added.
"Temperature is not much higher in Dubai and other cities but the humidity has been making conditions tougher. The discomfort level has risen to six on the scale of one to ten," Dr Gupta said.
He said current dusty conditions are expected to end in a day.
Hopes are high that drier south-easterly winds will push the mercury slightly higher but at the same time help push humidity levels down.
The eastern parts of the emirates have been experiencing hot and dry conditions with dust storms hitting the area daily in the afternoon. Sporadic drizzle has been experienced by residents of Al Ain and its surrounding areas.
Thick clouds have been appearing in the area regularly and the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) has been experimenting with artificial rain. A few days ago, such an experiment caused light rain in Al Ain and its surrounding areas.
According to the NCMS forecast for the next 48 hours, hot and hazy weather will continue with a chance of some towering clouds over the eastern mountainous areas by afternoon and evening.
Winds will be light to moderate but may kick up dust and sand in certain open areas.
"They may gain a speed of up to 18 knots at times," said the forecaster. The sea is expected to be moderate with offshore waves of about a metre in height.
