Sharjah: Concerts and musical workshops will ring out from Sharjah’s Flag Island over a free two-day cultural festival on December 16-17.

On the first day of the festival, a Polish musical duo, Iza Kowalewska and Ryszard Bazarnik, will teach a lively drums and vocals workshop from 2pm to 6pm. The workshop will use what organisers call “music therapy” to channel rhythms and song from people taking part.

Afterwards, Portuguese composer Carlos Guedes will perform, accompanied by a saxophonist and clarinettist. This will be followed by a concert at 8pm.

On the festival’s second day, the whole island will turn into an artists workshop where participants can build musical instruments out of recycled materials.

The festival is open to everyone. Entry to both the concert and both workshops are free.

“With more than 80 per cent of the UAE’s population characterised by residents hailing from all over the world, we are one of the most culturally diverse nations in the world,” said Flag Island manager Giuseppe Moscatello.

“Through this concert, we want to send out a message of our belief in promoting international solidarity by celebrating global cultures, and simultaneously developing the Flag Island as a central venue hosting artistic and literary events in the region,” he added.

Located inside Sharjah’s Khalid Lagoon, home to the surrounding Buhairah Corniche, Flag Island is best known for its towering 123-metre flagpole raised at the centre.

The island also has a stage, art gallery, a 1,000-seat open-air amphitheatre and a cafe.
