Dubai: Shindagha Heritage District is transforming to the biggest open air museum in a project that will preserve the history of Dubai and attract millions of tourists.
His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on Wednesday inspected the project to develop the Shindagha Heritage District.
The project to develop the Shindagha Heritage District is being carried out with the goal of making the area the biggest open-air museum that will contain a total of 23 sub-museums.
It is a part of efforts to develop heritage areas in the emirate in a way that suits their status as a testament of the important phases of Dubai’s history.
The project will help boost citizens’ ties with their heritage and historical roots and will consolidate Dubai as a first-class tourist destination offering various options that combine the authenticity of the past with modernity. It will contribute to realising strategic goal of attracting more than 20 million tourists by 2020 in line with Dubai’s tourism vision.
Shaikh Mohammad was accompanied by Shaikh Maktoum Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, and Shaikh Ahmad Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation. During the visit, Shaikh Mohammad emphasised the importance of preserving heritage areas and granting them full attention and care because they are vital parts of Dubai and UAE’s history.
He said that such areas are a bridge that links current and future generations with the UAE’s culture.
“Modernity is never realised until we can comprehend our history and derive lessons from it, and celebrate the areas that stand as testaments to the life of our forefathers, and how they forged the stepping stones for our renaissance,” said Shaikh Mohammad.
The Vice-President was briefed on the progress achieved in the project being carried out by Dubai Municipality in cooperation with the Department of Commerce Marketing and Tourism and Dubai Culture Authority.
Shaikh Mohammad then acquainted himself with the heritage majlis that is being implemented by his engineers’ office. The two-floor majlis occupies a space of 11,000 square feet.
Abdul Rahman Mohammad Al Owais, Chairman of Dubai Culture Authority, Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, and other officials also accompanied Shaikh Mohammad during the visit.
