Dubai: A mechanic has been accused of assaulting his roommate with an iron bar because he uprooted a small tree that the former had planted in front of their residence.

The 39-year-old Indian roommate was said to have uprooted the tree that the 36-year-old Bangladeshi mechanic, H.M., had planted before the latter returned to the room without prior notice in June 2015.

Prosecutors accused H.M. of assaulting his roommate and causing him a permanent disability.

The suspect admitted that he assaulted his roommate when he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Wednesday.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said the defendant assaulted the Indian and caused him a 2.5 per cent permanent disability in his hand.

“I beat him with my hands and did not use any hard object,” the suspect told presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi.

The 39-year-old Indian told prosecutors that the incident happened at 5pm. “I was at the petrol station where I wash cars and then left for the mosque for prayers. I prayed and headed home to Al Garhoud … and then I uprooted a tree that was planted outside my room’s door. Shortly after that, the suspect came to me and beat me on my left hand with a bar,” he testified to prosecutors.

Medical reports confirmed that the Indian lost the ability to fold his little finger.

A judgement will be heard on October 26.
