Dubai: More than 6.6 million riders used marine transport in the first half of this year in Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said on Friday.

Abras, the smaller boats, accounted for the biggest share of commuters, transporting as many as 6.2 million passengers.

Abdullah Yousuf Al Ali, CEO of the RTA’s Public Transport Agency, said: “Lifting 6,638,468 riders in six months by marine transit means is indicative of the public’s keenness to use these transit modes which offer users enjoyable and convenient rides.

“Abras of all types — traditional, electrical or air-conditioned — have accounted for the lion’s share of ridership by lifting as many as 6,251,358 riders in the first six months of this year. The attractiveness of abras underscores their nature as true historical marine transit mode involving a unique blend of the past and the future. The Water Bus came second, lifting 243,020 riders, followed by Ferry, which lifted 127,385 riders, ahead of the Water Taxi, which ranked fourth serving 16,705 riders.”

He added that the RTA reviews the latest techniques and trends of manufacturing and improving marine transit modes. Recently, the RTA reviewed the experience of Norway to get further exposure to electrical propulsion systems and the best ways and means adopted in this regard.

“Dubai coast offers a hospitable environment for marine transit mode riders spanning various community segments, especially tourists. These transit means offer riders picturesque and panoramic view of Dubai beaches and skyline … in addition to the latest addition, the Dubai Water Canal, offering a perfect and rich cruising experience,” said Al Ali.
