Dubai: A manager has been jailed for six months for offering Dh800 in bribe to a policeman so that the official would not book a hairstylist, who used someone else’s ID when she was asked for identification.

The policeman stopped the car of the 41-year-old Chinese manager, W.Y., as he spotted the 53-year-old Chinese woman hairstylist, H.Y., hiding behind the driver’s seat in March.

When asked to present her Emirates ID card, H.Y. gave the policeman someone else’s ID.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted W.Y. of offering bribe to the policeman in order not to take H.Y. into custody.

Presiding judge Mohammad Jamal also jailed H.Y. for three months for using someone else’s identification papers.

The Chinese duo pleaded guilty in court.

According to Tuesday’s ruling, the defendants will be deported after serving their jail terms.

The policeman said he suspected W.Y.’s car at Dubai Silicon Oasis and ordered the latter to stop following a short car chase.

“At first we saw H.Y. jumping on to the back seat. We followed the driver [W.Y.] and asked him to pull over but he continued driving until he reached a side road. We ordered him to pull over … when I stepped out of the police car and walked towards him, I noticed the woman trying to kneel down and hide behind the driver’s seat. I asked her to step out and asked her to present her Emirates ID. She called someone, who arrived within five minutes, and handed her an ID that she claimed to be hers. It was someone else’s ID. W.Y. offered me money not to apprehended H.Y. The two were taken into custody and then referred to the prosecution,” testified the policeman.

The primary ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
