Dubai: An unemployed man has been accused of smashing the front glass door of a mobile phone shop and stealing 8,312 memory cards worth around Dh128,000.

Prosecutors accused the 22-year-old Nigerian man, A.K., of stealing the memory cards of various sizes and capacities from the shop in Naif in September 2013.

The man pleaded guilty and confessed to stealing the memory cards when he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance recently.

The shop’s Iranian owner testified to prosecutors that he discovered the break-in at 9am when he went to open his outlet.

“When I reached the shop, I discovered that the front glass door was broken and someone had stolen the memory cards. When I examined the CCTV cameras, the footage showed an African-looking man carrying out the robbery at 4.53am,” said the Iranian. A policeman testified to prosecutors: “The defendant had already been in custody for his involvement in another robbery that was carried out using the same modus operandi. We brought him in for questioning, and he confessed that he and his accomplice [A.E.] used an iron rod to break the glass door and enter the shop. He admitted that they ran away after stealing the memory cards. Records showed that A.K. had a criminal record.”

A ruling will be heard on October 28.
